Getting fresh flowers on the regular
I cannot think as to when I felt the importance of having freshly cut flowers at home was a must-have. It could have been the empty vases being stored in cupboards, only coming out at special occasions. I suppose I have the same attitude towards champagne: why not enjoy it more frequently? This coupled with the exposure I had with Rebecca, a friend who then owned a flower shop near Brainard Airport, and built arrangements using less common flowers, led to a new interest in floral arrangements. They were beautiful and a stark contrast to what I typically found in grocery stores or neighborhood flower shops.
Years later, while out walking my dog Radar we stumbled upon a few vendors setting up for an event on Hartford’s Pratt Street. That’s when I met Window Box Farm. My eyes
were drawn to a woman setting up a table with these flowers that just looked like storybook flowers—wild, vivid. I have sought out their bouquets since and this spring enjoyed the flower subscription Lena, the owner, puts on. I have a lot more to learn about the flower farms in our state, but in a conversation with Lena she introduced me to the Connecticut Flower Collective as a source of locally grown flowers. Some of these flower farms run flower subscriptions, flower arrangement workshops, or larger orders for events like weddings. I hope to speak with a few more of these flower growers and see how we can enjoy these growing seasons with arrangements we won’t find in just any florist shop. More to come—and if you’re interested in flowers like I am, let me know.
